A drink in the pub is fine. But Leicester has a riverside park, a Georgian promenade, a cathedral with a remarkable story and plenty of countryside on the doorstep, and a first date with something to do takes the pressure off: you're side by side, there's always something to talk about, and it's easy to end early or stretch out if it's going well. Here are twelve ideas in and around Leicester.
Green space and water
1. Abbey Park
A big park close to the city centre, with the River Soar running through it, gardens, a boating lake and the remains of Leicester Abbey. Wide paths and plenty of benches make it an easy, relaxed walk that's simple to shorten or stretch out.
2. Castle Gardens and the riverside
A peaceful corner of the city beside the River Soar, close to the old Newarke area. A short stroll followed by a coffee nearby is a gentle way to start.
3. Bradgate Park
Open heathland, rocky outcrops, roaming deer and the ruins of an old house, just outside the city. Check the opening times and parking arrangements before you set off, and wear sensible shoes.
4. Watermead Country Park
A chain of lakes and paths north of the city near Birstall, with plenty of birdlife. It's flat, easy walking, and there's usually somewhere nearby for a hot drink. Check what's open before you go.
History and culture
5. Leicester Cathedral and the King Richard III Visitor Centre
The cathedral is where Richard III was reburied in 2015, and the visitor centre tells the story of how his remains were found nearby. It's a thoughtful, absorbing place with plenty to talk about. Check opening times and ticket details before you visit.
6. The Jewry Wall
The remains of a Roman building beside the old church of St Nicholas, close to the city centre. A short, interesting stop that gets you chatting about the city's long history. Check access before you go.
7. New Walk Museum and Art Gallery
Warm and dry inside, with art, natural history and plenty to look at. Talking about what you're seeing is a natural icebreaker. Check opening times and entry details before you go.
8. The National Space Centre
A fun, hands-on day out if you both like a bit of science and wonder. Check ticket prices and opening times before you book.
A little further out
9. Foxton Locks
A famous flight of canal locks near Market Harborough, with paths along the water and places to stop for a drink. It's best by car, so check parking and what's open first.
10. Loughborough's Queen's Park
A pleasant park in the middle of Loughborough with a carillon tower at its heart. Combine it with a wander round the town. Check opening times if you'd like to visit the tower.
Keep it simple
11. A coffee in the Lanes
The Lanes are Leicester's historic independent quarter, with small cafés, bars and shops. Short, sweet and easy to extend if it's going well.
12. A show at Curve
From musicals to comedy, there's usually something on at Leicester's theatre. It gives you something to talk about on the way home. Check what's on and book ahead.
A few tips before you go
- Choose somewhere public for the first meeting, and make your own way there.
- Let a friend know where you're going and when you expect to be back.
- Check the weather and opening times before you set off.
- Keep the first date short. If it goes well, you'll have a reason for a second.
